The European Cooperating Objects Network of Excellence (CONET) recognises the efforts of a FADA-CATEC researcher for his work in the field of multi-robot systems

Doctor Antidio Viguria Jiménez, head of the Avionics Department of FADA-CATEC, has received the award for the best industrial doctoral thesis granted by the European Cooperating Objects Network of Excellence (CONET), for his thesis entitled “Market-based distributed task allocation methodologies applied to multi-robot exploration”, developed in the Robotics, Vision and Control Group of the Higher Technical School of Engineering of the University of Seville.

The prize was handed over during the European Conference on Wireless Sensor Networks, EWSN 2010, held from 17 to 19 February at the University of Coimbra in Portugal. This was the seventh in a series of annual meetings which focus on the latest research in the field of wireless sensor networks and cooperating objects.

The work carried out by Doctor Viguria Jiménez focuses on the study and development of new multi-robot systems through the assignment of tasks which enable enhanced cooperation, optimisation and efficiency of the work carried out by these robots, including recent contributions in the field of cooperation between multiple robots. Robotics has become one of the key areas of research and application for the aeronautical and aerospace sector, particularly in the field of unmanned aircraft systems.

CONET (European Cooperating Objects Network of Excellence) is a project financed by the EU through the 7th Framework Programme in the area of ICT, which began in 2008 with a budget of 4 million euros and has a duration of four years. The aim of this consortium is to create a knowledge community for all matters relating to cooperating objects in Europe which includes research partners, the public sector and industry in the areas of integrated systems, ubiquitous computing and wireless sensor networks.

The Project consists of a network of prestigious experts, researchers and scientists from different universities, institutions and academic and research centres throughout Europe, including the Andalusian Association of Research and Industrial Cooperation (AICIA). Its associate members include the Centre for Advanced Aerospace Technology (CATEC).
